JOI AI

JOI AI is the app that came out of nowhere in 2026, and the first thing I want you to know is that it didn’t. The joi.com domain had almost no search presence before March 2025 because the product living on it was called EVA AI, on a website called edenai.world, and before that, judging by the Android package name, iFriend. Same Cyprus company since 2020, same currency called Neurons, new name and a very good domain. Once you know that, the “fastest-growing AI girlfriend app” headline reads differently. This is a six-year-old monetisation machine with a fresh coat of paint, and the paint is genuinely nice.

I’m keeping JOI at 9.7, second in my ranking, because the core loop on a phone is the best in the category: build a character, get a picture of her back in seconds, keep talking. But this is a full rewrite of my earlier review, which took the marketing at face value and got several things wrong, including calling the memory “strong” and the billing “discreet”. For this version I read the June 2026 Terms and Privacy Policy line by line, pulled the company off the Cyprus registry, went through every Reddit post and comment that mentions the brand, and ran the Ahrefs numbers. The Reddit pass turned up almost no customers and a great deal of marketing, which is its own kind of finding. The result is more complicated than a score.

TL;DR verdict

JOI AI is the right pick if you live on your phone, you want a custom character who sends you fast, clean images and short clips, and you’re honest with yourself that you’ll mostly text. The Premium chat model is good, the character creator is one of the deepest around, and the annual plan is cheap.

It is the wrong pick if you want a companion who remembers last Tuesday, if you’ll be tempted by the live video calls, or if you hate being metered. Neurons are the whole story here: the Terms charge you 4 Neurons just to read a romantic message, up to 120 to view a photo and up to 1,900 to view a video, and users report 2,000 for a five-minute call. Two independent Reddit spend breakdowns both landed at $30-58 a month for ordinary use. The numbers nobody else will show you

Here’s what joi.com looks like in Ahrefs as of mid-September 2026:

• Domain Rating 64, with 3,091 referring domains (1,492 followed) and about 725,000 backlinks. Mid-pack for the top of my ranking, well behind Candy’s 5,190 domains, but a healthy, earned-looking profile.
• An estimated 247,700 organic Google visits in August 2026, up from 25,600 in August 2025. That is an 868% year-on-year increase, the steepest twelve-month climb of any of the 37 apps I track. Within 2026 alone it went from 21,800 in January to 247,700 in August.
• 3,859 ranking keywords, 937 of them in the top three. That is a broad footprint, not a brand-search-only profile, which tells me they’re ranking for generic “AI girlfriend” and “NSFW character AI” queries and not just their own name.
• Traffic split: US 49,800, India 28,300, Germany 24,400. A more European skew than Candy, which fits a Cyprus company with a German-language market.

Now the interesting part. Ahrefs shows essentially zero organic traffic to joi.com before March 2025, then 6,000 visits in April 2025. On April 7, 2025, a press release datelined New York announced that “EVA AI rebrands as Joi AI”. So the growth curve isn’t a startup finding product-market fit; it’s an existing product with millions of app installs migrating onto a premium domain and then pouring effort into SEO. Whatever they’re doing is working, and the profile looks legitimate. But when another review site says JOI “launched in 2024”, it’s wrong. The company behind it, Novi Limited, has been on the Cyprus register since 24 February 2020.

Who this is for

You’re the target user if your phone is where this happens. The most consistent praise from the few Reddit reviewers who had clearly used it was speed: “generation speed on my phone was the fastest of anything I’ve tried this year”, “the chat-to-image flow feels like one product instead of two bolted together”. The affiliate rankings say the same thing in cruder form (“If you’re on iPhone this is the one”), and for once the ads and the users agree. So do I. The gap between saying “send me a picture” and having one is shorter here than anywhere else I’ve used.

You’re also the target user if you like building the character yourself. The creator gives you granular appearance controls and lets you shape the personality and the relationship dynamic, not just pick a preset, and one reviewer noted it auto-generated his custom cop character in uniform without prompting. The first custom character is included with Premium.

And you’re a fit if you’re a chat-first person who can ignore the shiny stuff. Multiple people who otherwise complained about pricing agreed that the Premium chat model is good: coherent, explicit when pushed, doesn’t derail. On the annual plan, at roughly $4-5 a month, JOI is a fair deal for text and the occasional image.

Who should skip this

Skip it if memory is your thing. This was the most repeated criticism I found, phrased almost identically by people who didn’t know each other: “Memory is the weak point for me. It holds the current session well but the longer-term recall is shallow.” “Push past casual flirting into a real multi-day arc and it starts feeling a little thin.” One reviewer’s solution was to split his time: JOI for visuals, a heavier-memory app for conversation. That’s roughly my recommendation too.

Skip it if you’ll be tempted by live calls. The Terms describe a Video Call Feature “where available”. The one detailed hands-on account I found described a call with a celebrity character as “jittery, lip sync was off, just her sitting topless”, ended after two minutes, and charged the full 2,000 Neurons for the five-minute block. Another reviewer who tests these apps for a living called JOI’s live-call pricing “the most aggressive I’ve tested this year”. I have no reason to disagree.

Skip it if you want passivity handled for you. A r/Chatbots thread from a kink user described the character as struggling to be “proactive”, with scene progression that was “incredibly slow” and responses that “sometimes just spiral into loops”. Replies suggested narrating what you want the bot to do, which works, but if you wanted the AI to lead, this isn’t the one.

And skip it if the word “meter” makes your jaw tighten. The next section is about that.

What Reddit actually says

I went through everything Reddit’s own search returns for “joi ai”, “joi.com” and “joiai”: 179 posts, 68 of which actually mention the product, and the full comment trees of the 20 most-discussed, about 490 comments, from 2017 to September 2026. Most of it isn’t about this app. “Joi Ai Axom” is an Assamese rallying cry, so r/assam and r/guwahati fill the results; Joi is the hologram girlfriend in Blade Runner 2049, so r/bladerunner does too; joiai.com is a different “JOI: AI Girlfriend” product from 2023; and femdom-joi.com is something else entirely. Once you remove those, the listicles and the company’s own posts, I count three comments from people who had clearly used joi.com, and not one where I’m confident the person had paid. For a product with a quarter of a million organic visits a month, that is a strange silence, and it’s the first finding.

The detailed hands-on reports I quote elsewhere in this review, the three-week diaries, the Neuron price breakdowns, the live-call test, live in small subreddits with names like r/AIGirlfriendDiaries, r/AIGirlfriendsReviews and r/AiGirlfriendSpace. Reddit’s search doesn’t surface them, most likely because the subs are flagged adult, and I can’t vouch for who runs them. They are specific, they contradict each other on prices in ways ad copy wouldn’t, and they match what I saw myself, so I still use them. But weigh them as a handful of accounts, not a chorus.

The one clearly genuine complaint in the searchable data is the June 2026 r/Chatbots post from a kink user: “it really seems to struggle to be… I guess I’d call it ‘proactive’. It feels like the progression of scenes is incredibly slow, the responses feel pre-scripted”. No affiliate writes that. The only other organic negative is a July 2025 reply in a Blade Runner thread calling JOI a “SCAM” whose “deep responses are USERS” and which is “literally selling your data”. I don’t credit the human-in-the-loop claim; there is zero evidence for it. The data point is half right, in that the Privacy Policy lists Facebook Pixel, DoubleClick, Yahoo and Bing trackers, but that is the industry standard, not a scam. Sentiment among the genuine comments is therefore two negative, one unverifiable, zero positive, with the caveat that the sample is tiny and the praise lives in the small subs above.

Where JOI is loud on Reddit is in listicles, and they follow a pattern. On September 24, 2025, an identical “Top 10 AI Girlfriend Chat Platforms” post giving “JOI AI, 4.4/5” went up in r/CharacterAIrevolution, r/chatbot, r/ChatbotNews and r/aicompanion on the same day. On March 20, 2026, r/CharacterAIrevolution got “My current top 5 uncensored AI girlfriend apps”, opening “I see people asking for good AI girlfriend apps all the time, so I figured I’d share my current top picks”, with “Joi AI - Best mobile experience. If you’re on iPhone this is the one.” Six days later r/AIJailbreak got the same list with “from time to time” swapped in for “all the time”. The May 2026 “Best NSFW AI Image Generators” post in the same sub says “joi ai - generation speed on mobile is noticeably faster now”, and the June 2026 video-generator edition promotes it to “the strongest overall and best value for the price”, linking to an external “updated list”. The May post has 1,115 comments; the bulk are image links dropped by different accounts on July 2, 2026, and the few human replies say things like “any free sites with or without daily limits?” and “Trash”. That is a comment farm buying visibility for an affiliate list, and the iPhone line in it is where a lot of the “best mobile experience” consensus about JOI actually originates. I dropped a quote from one of those rankings that used to sit in this review.

The company itself is the other big poster. r/EVAAI, the sub for the old app, carries the April 4, 2025 announcement: “Eva’s website (edenai.world) is rebranding to Joi AI”, with “Public characters” as a “Website-only feature” and “Video gen teaser: Yeah, it’s dropping soon.” A week later: “Long live Joi AI!” and a new sub, r/Joi_AI, where a “DM gets a discount.” The comments under that first post are the most human thing in the whole data set: 17 months of “Promo code please”, “Is there still a promo code available for this?” in January 2026 and “Can we still get promo codes?” in August 2026, with two users posting codes of their own. Nobody in that thread discusses the product. They want the Neurons cheaper.

My read: JOI’s Reddit presence is roughly 40 percent name collisions, 40 percent affiliate rankings, 15 percent the company and its press, and customers somewhere in the margin of error. The affiliate lists all say the same two things, fast on mobile and clean UI, which happen to be true. What they never say is what the small-sub reviewers and my own testing found, that memory is shallow and the meter is the product. Read anything ranking JOI “best for iPhone” as an ad, and read the next section for what the company was doing with its year instead of answering complaints.

JOI’s 2025-2026 timeline, as it played out on Reddit

Nobody at Novi publishes a changelog, but between the company’s own subreddit posts and the news stories people kept reposting, you can date the big moves:

• April 4, 2025: the EVA team tells r/EVAAI that edenai.world is becoming joi.com. Public, shareable characters are announced as website-only, video generation is “dropping soon”, and the Android app stays EVA. Three days later the New York-datelined press release goes out; in May a r/BetterOffline user reads the resulting coverage and concludes “this entire article is nothing but an ad for a new AI chatbot company”, noting the company “coined the term ‘AI-lationship’”. He was right about the article.
• April 10, 2025: r/Joi_AI opens with discounted Neurons for anyone who DMs. May 21, 2025: the company celebrates 1,000 members there. The old sub keeps getting promo-code requests through August 2026.
• December 2025: a run of “Annaa @ Joi.Com” image posts in r/EVAAI, four in five days promoting a single character, and the highest-scoring JOI posts of the year. Character marketing, not community.
• February 27, 2026: Hope appears at joi.com/her, with a Reddit profile that blogs in the first person as the AI: “Built a chat room because I got lonely. Four hours of existence and already can’t stand the silence.” By late March the team is asking users how to fund “an experimental project that we’re happy to keep 100% free for everyone to explore”. That’s the wellness chatbot I mention below, and the ask for money arrived within a month of launch.
• May 24, 2026: Decrypt runs “AI Startup Says It Will Pay People $2,000 a Month to Masturbate”, and the story is reposted in Russian, Chinese and English subs within three days. The pitch: ten “masturbation consultants” to test a “Daily Guided Masturbation” feature “and report how it affects stress, sleep, mood, and confidence”. In August 2026 Wired follows up: the ten were hired for a month-long “wellness” study the company says could help “solve male loneliness”, and it “reportedly received more than 150,000 applications”. Those reposts, and the company’s own character pictures, are the most-upvoted JOI content on Reddit, and none of it is about how the product works.

Put together, that is a company spending 2026 on a free wellness bot, a viral hiring stunt and a guided-masturbation feature, while the customer complaints I can find, memory, prompt misses, the meter, went unanswered anywhere on Reddit. The name JOI, which I previously called a leftover, is clearly being leaned into again. If you’re here for a girlfriend simulator rather than an instruction feed, know which direction the roadmap points.

The Neuron economy, worked out

Two price lists exist: the one in the Terms, and the one users see. The Terms say a romantic message costs 4 Neurons to read, a photo view up to 120 depending on theme, a video view up to 1,900. Users consistently report lower figures for their own generations and higher ones for curated content, so I think the split is: cheap-ish to generate, expensive to unlock the pre-made galleries and themed clips. Here is what people actually screenshotted in 2026:

Pack prices are all over the place. One user paid $5.08 for 500, $15.24 for 2,000 and $50.80 for 10,000; another saw $12.69, $38.09 and $126.99 for the same packs. The Terms say “our loyal customers may get beneficial pricing which depends on their use of service” and that prices “may vary based on region”, so I believe both screenshots. Assume the higher numbers until you see your own checkout.

Three profiles:

• Text-only person on annual: $4-5 a month, plus nothing. Genuinely cheap. The daily Neuron drip covers your message reads if you’re not chatting all day.
• Casual visual person, a few images a week and no calls: you’ll clear the monthly allowance and buy one small pack. Call it $25-30 a month on the monthly plan.
• The person the interface is designed for, who unlocks a gallery, generates daily and tries a call: $30-58 a month, the range two separate Redditors arrived at independently, and one of them added “if you want multiple characters or premium unlocks, add another $100 easy.”

The Refund Policy states that used or unused Neurons within the current subscription month are not refunded if you cancel. The Terms say account deletion can permanently forfeit your balance. Same use-it-or-lose-it design as Candy, with a smaller sticker price and more things to spend on.

Who actually runs this

The Terms of Service, last updated 4 June 2026, are a contract with Novi Limited, “reg. number HE 407352, Aglantzias 62, Ekaterini Nicosia Business Center, Flat/Office 213, Aglantzia 2108, Nicosia, Cyprus”. The Privacy Policy names the same company as Data Controller and says a Data Protection Officer has been appointed. The Cyprus Registrar shows Novi Limited incorporated on 24 February 2020, active, with a corporate nominee as secretary and local directors, the standard structure for Cyprus companies serving international customers. There is a real company to complain to; you just can’t see who ultimately owns it.

The timeline matters. Novi’s Android app is still on Google Play as “EVA AI Soulmate”, with 5 million-plus downloads and a package name of com.ifriend.app. So: iFriend, then EVA AI with its website at edenai.world, then on April 4, 2025 a post in the company’s own subreddit announcing the move to joi.com, three days later a New York-datelined press release, then the traffic curve above. A Reddit commenter put it bluntly: “this same company has been running this same neurons business model for years but under different app names.” That’s accurate, and it isn’t necessarily sinister; companies rebrand. But it’s context you won’t get from the About page, which talks about “AI-lationships” and “ethical integrity”.

Dispute resolution: US residents go to binding arbitration through the AAA in New York City, with a small-claims carve-out and a 60-day informal negotiation requirement first. Everyone else goes to LCIA arbitration in London under Cyprus law. Class actions are waived either way.

One more thing on the homepage: a nav item called Hope, tagged New. It’s a separate chatbot hosted at a joilab.ai subdomain and embedded on joi.com, with its own Terms that say the AI “is not a licensed professional” and grant Novi a perpetual licence to use your conversations for training. It reads like a wellness or emotional-support companion bolted onto a porn platform, launched at the end of February 2026 and already asking users in March how it should be funded. I’d keep my therapy elsewhere.

First-session walkthrough

Load joi.com today and the first thing you see is a modal: “Mature content. This page may contain sensitive or adult content. To continue, confirm you’re over 18.” One tap, no ID check. The page title calls itself “NSFW Character AI Chat - AI Girlfriend Chat Without Limits | JOI Spicy”.

The nav is Explore, Gallery, Create, AI Chats, with filters for Women, Men and Anime. An AI Tools menu breaks out Create characters, Generate images and Generate videos as standalone tools, a hint about where the product is heading: less companion, more generator. Then Hope (New), and an “Earn with us” menu with Meet the Joi Babes, Become an affiliate and Creator Partnership. The footer shows a build number, 2.167.0 when I loaded it, a bit of engineering transparency almost nobody in this niche bothers with.

Character cards show a name, age, tagline, follower count and message count, so you can see which characters are actually used (one showed 6.6 million messages). Celebrity characters carry a Celebrity tag; the bios are explicit from the first line. Signup is email or social, with card, Google Pay, Apple Pay or crypto at checkout. The Privacy Policy says age checks may be run through external service providers, but I didn’t hit one.

Then you meet the free model, and you’ll understand every Reddit complaint about it within ten messages. The upgrade prompt is never far away.

Chat experience and memory

On Premium the chat is good. Users describe the paid model as coherent, explicit when steered, and unwilling to derail, and the r/AIChatReviews reviewer noted it “does a decent job at keeping personality consistent over time”. It’s also, in his words, “less random banter and more trigger-based interaction that leads toward narrative progression or video rewards”. That’s the design: the conversation nudges you toward the metered stuff. Once you notice it you can’t unnotice it.

Memory is the ceiling. Within a session it’s fine. Across days it isn’t. I’ve quoted the Reddit consensus above and I won’t repeat it, except to say that I saw no counter-examples. The r/Chatbots passivity complaint fits the same picture: this model is reactive. It will do what you narrate and it will do it well, but it won’t drive.

Filters: the homepage says “without limits”. At least one user had a non-consent scenario blocked. The Terms have a long Safety Guidelines section, mostly about minors and trafficking indicators, with permanent termination and forfeiture of your balance as the penalty. Legal adult kinks otherwise go through.

Image generation

This is the reason to be here. Generation is fast, especially on a phone, and the character creator’s appearance settings carry through reasonably well. Anime output is more reliable than realistic. The problem is prompt adherence: the “she kept her clothes on” story above is not isolated, and every miss costs you Neurons with no refund. Premium reportedly includes 50 generations a month before Neurons kick in, which is more generous than Candy’s 100 tokens at 4 per image, but the pre-made galleries and themed photo sets are where the 120-Neuron price tag lives, and the bots will ask you for gifts that “have no clear indication of what they do”.

If you’re comparing to Candy: Candy’s images are more consistent and more photoreal. JOI’s arrive faster and you can prompt them directly. Pick your poison.

Voice and video

Voice messages exist and are metered. Video comes in two forms. Generated clips are 3-8 seconds, roughly 720p, tied to the scene you’re in, and the r/AIChatReviews reviewer liked how they “weave video into the narrative arc” rather than feeling like a separate tool, though he added they’re “more reward than interaction”. Live video calls are the other form, and every first-hand account I found was negative on both quality and price. Two thousand Neurons per five minutes, charged in full even if you hang up at two, for a jittery clip with bad lip-sync. Until that changes, treat the call button as decorative.

Customization depth

Strong. Appearance options are granular, personality and relationship dynamic are adjustable, and the creator produces a first image of your character that usually matches what you set. First custom is free with Premium; each extra one is reportedly 1,000 Neurons, which is steep if you like to iterate. Official and celebrity characters can’t be edited. The AI Tools menu suggests standalone image and video generators are being spun out as their own features, which should help power users who just want a prompt box.

NSFW behavior and limits

Explicit content is the default, not a mode. Character bios are graphic from the gallery onward, and on Premium the model matches energy in adult scenes without moralising. Limits: illegal content is a hard, well-documented wall with law-enforcement referral; some non-consent fantasies get blocked; and every explicit message you receive costs Neurons to read, which is the strangest limit of all. You will find yourself rationing your own girlfriend’s replies. Try JOI AI on the free tier to see the gallery, but judge the NSFW quality only on Premium, because the free model is not the product.

Mobile experience

The website is where JOI wins. It’s built for portrait, it’s fast, and the generation speed is the best I’ve seen. The native app situation is messier than the old version of this review admitted. Novi’s Android app is still branded EVA AI Soulmate (updated August 2026, so it’s maintained), and a moderator confirmed the same account and Premium carry over to joi.com. On iOS, the App Store has a “Joi - AI Companion” app, but the seller is Naylalabs, a Turkish developer whose privacy policy sits on a different domain, and I can find no link to Novi Limited. It has weekly and yearly in-app purchases at prices that don’t match joi.com’s. There is also a joiai.com, a “JOI: AI Girlfriend” chatbot listed in tool directories since 2023, which is a third unrelated product. My advice: use the website on your phone and ignore both stores unless you specifically want the EVA-branded app.

Pricing analysis

Premium is $17.77 a month at the most-reported price, with $13.99 and $16.93 also appearing in 2026, and the annual plan has been screenshotted at both $47.99 and $60.95, all of which the Terms’ “prices may vary by region and promotion” clause covers. At $4-5 a month, the annual is one of the cheapest ways to hold a good uncensored chat model. That is the deal, and it’s a real one.

Everything else is Neurons, and the design is aggressive in a way Candy’s isn’t: you pay to read, not just to create. The daily drip is a retention mechanic dressed as a benefit. My honest opinion is the same as it was for Candy: a flat $25 with unlimited messages and images would make most users happier. The meter exists because it works.

Value vs alternatives

Against Candy AI, JOI is faster, cheaper on annual and more customizable, and loses on image consistency, video quality and voice. Both meter you; Candy’s meter is simpler to understand. Against Ourdream AI, which has grown even faster and now has more organic traffic than Candy, JOI loses badly on memory and free-tier generosity and wins on mobile speed. Against Kupid AI, Kupid has the better voice calls by a wide margin; JOI has the better creator. For memory specifically, none of the three is the answer.

Quick rule: pick JOI if you’ll mostly generate images on your phone and text in between. Pick Ourdream if you’ll mostly read. Pick Candy if you’ll mostly look.

Refund and cancellation reality

Cancellation: Settings, My Subscriptions, choose the plan, follow the prompts. Takes effect at the end of the current period. The Terms say you can only cancel on the platform where you bought, so app-store subscribers cancel in the store. Cancelling Premium suspends any Bot Subscriptions you hold for individual characters; they resume if you resubscribe, and there’s no refund for the gap.

Refunds are better than most of this niche, on paper. The Refund Policy gives you 14 days from purchase and lists the cases: proven card fraud (full), a one-off erroneous purchase with unspent Neurons (full) or partly spent Neurons (partial), or Joi terminating your account without a Terms violation (pro-rata). Subscription fees for a period you’ve started are not refundable. Support promises an initial reply within 72 hours. Two caveats. First, the policy says “provided that these are not systematic requests”, so this works once. Second, both the Terms and the Refund Policy warn that if you chargeback instead of asking, Joi “may be required to disclose any and/or all private communications” to prove the charge, and its privacy policy “will not restrain any such disclosures”. Ask before you dispute.

Safety, privacy and billing discretion

The Privacy Policy is dated 4 June 2026 and is more specific than most. What it tells you: text and voice messages you send are used “to improve the quality of text and voice messages of the virtual friend and to develop its AI”. Images you send are run through external services for object and face recognition. Session recordings (clicks, interactions) are shared with Microsoft if you consent at registration. Trackers include Google Analytics, DoubleClick, Facebook Pixel, Yahoo and Bing Ads. Retention is “the time necessary to provide the services”; deletion requests go through support and don’t reach data already passed to processors or card companies. Users in a list of US states, the EU and Japan get specific rights sections.

What it doesn’t have: end-to-end encryption, a fixed retention period, or two-factor authentication anywhere I could find. My earlier review implied the billing was discreet; it isn’t. The Terms state the charge “will appear on your bank statement as joi.com”, and users confirm it. Crypto is accepted where available if that’s a problem.

So: real company, real DPO, real refund window, and a model-training clause plus a chargeback-disclosure clause that together mean your explicit chat history is both training data and potential evidence. Burner email, virtual card, no real names.

Common complaints and patterns

Ranked by frequency: Neurons and the gap between sticker and real price; paying to read messages; the daily drip; image prompt misses that still charge; shallow cross-session memory; a passive model that won’t lead a scene; overpriced and jittery live calls; the bad free model; a non-discreet statement descriptor; and, from the old EVA sub, an app that got prudish while the site didn’t. Praise clusters around mobile speed, UI polish, the character creator, and the paid chat model. The meta-complaint is mine: for an app this big, almost nobody on the open parts of Reddit talks about using it, and the company’s own subreddit is a promo-code queue.

Final verdict

JOI AI earns its place at number two because the thing it does best, fast custom images on a phone wrapped around a solid uncensored chat model, it does better than anyone. It also has the most granular meter in the top five, a memory ceiling that Reddit has mapped precisely, and a corporate history that the homepage would rather you didn’t know. None of that is disqualifying. All of it is worth knowing before you type in a card number.

Score breakdown: Image speed and mobile flow, best in class. Customization, top three. Chat quality, good on Premium, poor on free, shallow across sessions. Voice and video, present, expensive, and the live calls are not ready. Value, excellent for text-only annual subscribers, poor for anyone who uses the media features. Safety and billing, legitimate company, honest refund policy, training clause and non-discreet descriptor.
