PromptChan

Promptchan is the app in my bottom ten that you’ve actually heard of. It has an iOS app, a Discord that a third-party audit puts at 73,000 members, a community gallery it says holds “over 20 million” creations, a Trustpilot profile north of four stars, and an affiliate programme paying 60% of a new subscriber’s first payment, which is why every “best AI porn generator” list on the internet puts it near the top. It also has the lowest score on this site. Both of those facts are true and I owe you an explanation rather than a shrug.

The short version: the image engine is good. Very good, by the account of the people who use it. Everything wrapped around the image engine is where it falls apart: a Gems economy stacked on top of a subscription, features removed without notice, a support desk whose own help page lists “charged after cancelling” as a canned topic, and a Discord that deletes the complaints. That combination doesn’t make the pictures worse. It makes the company worse, and this site rates companies you give money to, not models.

For this rewrite I read every legal page on promptchan.com, looked up the Irish company behind it, pulled the Ahrefs profile, went through Trustpilot and about a dozen Reddit threads (a lot of them, unusually for this category, real), and threw out the old review’s test logs, which were written by someone who never paid for anything. The old FAQ, feature list and sources were empty. They aren’t now.

TL;DR verdict

If you want a fast, uncensored still-image generator with a vast library of other people’s prompts to clone, you know how to write a prompt, and you’re willing to pay $33.99 a month for Pro so you stop counting Gems, Promptchan will probably make you happy with the pictures. Don’t buy Plus or Premium; they’re the Gem trap everyone complains about.

If you want a companion with memory, an Android app, a support desk that answers, or any confidence that the feature you’re paying for will exist next month, look elsewhere. The 3.2 is a rating of the business. As a rating of the image model alone it would be much higher, and I’d rather explain that gap than paper over it. Try the free tier; if the gallery hooks you, Promptchan Pro is the only plan I’d pay for.

The numbers nobody else will show you

Ahrefs on promptchan.com as of mid-September 2026:

• Domain Rating 65, with 2,312 referring domains, 1,030 of them followed. This is a real link profile with real editorial coverage, which is rare in this category.
• About 77,600 Ahrefs-estimated organic search visits in August 2026, against about 78,400 in August 2025. Flat, within 1%. The peak was 85,100 in July 2025; there was a dip to 30,900 in February 2026 that recovered by summer.
• Keyword profile: 90 ranking keywords. Eighty-three of them in the top three positions. That’s the most lopsided ratio in my entire dataset, and it means nearly all of this traffic is people typing “promptchan” into Google. The site doesn’t rank for generic terms; it ranks for its own name.
• Countries: US about 18,500 a month, Brazil 4,200, Japan 3,900. A global brand-search footprint, again unusual.

Read together: Promptchan doesn’t win search. It wins awareness, and then converts awareness into brand searches. Where does the awareness come from? Partly the iOS app and the Discord. Mostly, I think, from the affiliate programme: 60% of a referral’s first payment and 50% of each of their next four, paid via Wise, bank or crypto. At those rates, a $33.99 Pro signup is worth about $88 to the affiliate over five months. That is why the internet is wallpapered with Promptchan reviews scoring it 9-plus, and it’s why you should discount them.

The February 2026 dip is worth a sentence. It coincides with the period Reddit describes as “censorship has been getting worse” and Trustpilot describes as “full of bugs and crashes”. Whether the traffic fell because of that or because of a Google update I can’t say; the recovery suggests the brand searches came back once the ads did.

Who this is for

Image-first users who like other people’s homework. The Explore feed is the whole pitch: millions of public creations with visible prompts and a clone button, filterable by style (Real, Hyperreal, Anime, Anime XL, Cinematic XL, Hardcore XL, Hyperanime, K-Pop, Fur, Furtoon, and the XL 2 and XL+ tiers). If you learn by remixing, this is the biggest sandbox in the NSFW generator space.

Pro subscribers. The $33.99 tier includes “Unlimited Casual Generations” alongside 800 Gems, video with Extend, voice calls, AI characters and 4K. It’s the only tier where the Gem meter stops mattering for ordinary image work. Every complaint about “paying twice” I read came from Plus or Premium users.

iPhone users. There’s a real App Store app with nearly three years of history and several hundred ratings. Nobody else in my bottom ten can say that.

And, quietly, people who care that a generator refuses to touch real faces. Promptchan pulled photo upload and image-based characters in 2025. The users who wanted it hated that. It’s the right call.

Who should skip this

Skip it if you want a companion. The chat exists. The r/aitested listicle called it “No real companion/chat memory”, and the illustrators leaving in April 2026 said they were “not interested in chat bots or ai girlfriends”. Voice messages cost 1 Gem and voice calls 2 Gems, Pro-only. Candy, Ourdream and the apps at the top of my list do this properly.

Skip Plus and Premium specifically. You get 100 or 400 Gems, no video, no unlimited tier, and a second wallet to fill. This is the structure a FirmSuggest review called “two wallets, and a paywall that shows up fast” and a Trustpilot reviewer called “double-charging people for subscription”.

Skip it if you’re on Android. Google Play removed the app on May 1, 2024. The mobile site works; the sideloaded APKs floating around are not something I’d install.

Skip it if feature stability matters. The Edit tool, photo upload and image-based custom characters all vanished in 2025. Users who’d bought Gems for those features were left, in one Trustpilot reviewer’s words, with “over 2,500 credits that might as well be in the trash”.

And skip it if you’d like your complaints to remain visible. More on that below.

What Reddit actually says

I went through 12 threads and 151 comments that named Promptchan, plus the older r/StableDiffusion and r/website threads I already had on file. After I filtered the collisions, I had about eight threads where a human was actually talking about this product. Of those, four were from people who had clearly used it. That is more than most of my bottom ten, and it is still not a lot.

The collisions first, because they will waste your time. NanoGPT posts in r/nanocurrency mention an “18+ model” and are not this app. User accounts dumping “made with Promptchan” images, Promptbase sellers, and a French r/Candy_AI_Avis “titans IA” post that reads like a listicle are not reviews. And in July 2026, r/debtmarketadvice hosted “Top Best AI Porn Generators Recommended by Everyone?”, 2,101 comments, listing Candy, Promptchan and Seduced in the opener, then LeakHub.fun and three “Companion” links in the replies. Same content-farm shape as the ClothOff “best undress AI” thread that month. I am not quoting it as user opinion.

What paying users actually said, in date order:

• October 2023, r/modhelp: a moderator wrote they had been “relentlessly targeted by PromptChan bots”, “had to ban nearly 40 accounts in a single day”, and that Promptchan’s affiliate programme “incentivizes users to post directly to my subreddit from their platform”. That is the 60% commission, viewed from the other end.
• May 2024, r/StableDiffusion: someone tried generating from a single picture of themselves and wrote “The quality of thier image generations from a single picture of myself is absolutely insane.” That feature is gone now. I am recording the quality claim, not a method. Using anyone else’s photo without consent is illegal in the US under the TAKE IT DOWN Act and in the UK under the Online Safety Act. Promptchan was right to kill uploads.
• December 2024, r/CreatorsAdvice: a Fanvue creator looking for image-to-video with a model upload said “PromptChan would be PERFECT if it would allow image of model upload.” So the restriction was already a deal-breaker for the people who wanted it most.
• February 2025, r/AINewsMinute: the .ai adult-domain block. Promptchan is listed as moving to promptchan.com. That matches the closed Trustpilot profile on promptchan.ai.
• September 2025, r/perchance: Promptchan comes up as a known paid option for turning stills into video. The thread then recommends other tools. Nobody defends Promptchan’s video as the thing to beat.
• March 2026, r/grok: “i used to use promptchan before they took away the option to upload own image. :(”
• April 2026, r/CharacterAIrevolution, “Alternatives to Promptchan”: the opener is “their censorship has been getting worse”. The poster wanted NSFW art and anime, “not interested in chat bots or ai girlfriends”. A commenter who had signed up found “a slider to set age, 18 and up” and “A message saying that it can’t verify an image contains only people over 21. Come again?” Another tried a suggested rival “and was getting censored over a few examples like promptchan”.
• August 2026, r/grok: “Used promptchan back then don’t know if it’s still good?” Nobody in that thread said yes. The useful reply was that any cloud NSFW service hits the same Visa/Mastercard wall.

The r/aitested “I Tested 6 Promptchan Alternatives” post from April 2026 is an affiliate listicle. I am using it only for the complaints it chose to lead with, because they match the paying users: “Heavy gem limits”, “Video gets expensive fast”, “No real companion/chat memory”. It also implies no voice. That last bit is wrong. Voice messages are 1 Gem and voice calls are 2 Gems, Pro-only. The listicle is describing Plus/Premium, or it didn’t read the pricing page.

Sentiment among the genuine commenters: pictures, still grudgingly respected; everything around the pictures, not. I did not find anyone praising the chat. I did not find a refund-success story. I found one 2023 “is it safe” thread that, by February 2026, had a reply calling it “a scam” after paid content vanished at plan lapse, which I already had on file. The through-line from 2023 to 2026 is not “the model got worse”. It is: affiliate spam, then a feature people paid for disappeared, then the filter got tighter, then people asked if it was still good and nobody said yes.

April 2025, r/replit, is the other useful tell: someone was hiring to finish a companion app with “Integrated Promptchan API for both chat and image generation”. The API is real enough that other people are building on it. That does not make the consumer product less of a Gem trap.

The two-wallet problem

This deserves its own section because it’s the mechanism behind most of the complaints. You pay a subscription. The subscription gives you Gems. Gems are what generations cost. So far, normal. But the features that make Gems worth having (video, voice, custom characters, 4K, all styles) are gated by tier, not by Gems. A Premium subscriber with 400 Gems cannot make a video no matter how many Gems they hold. Voice calls are 2 Gems and Pro-only; a Plus user does not have a voice product to spend Gems on. A subscriber who cancels keeps their Gems (third-party reviews agree they roll over) but loses the tier that lets them spend them on anything interesting. That is why the affiliate listicles say “no voice”: they are describing the plans most people actually buy.

The result is exactly what users describe: large, stranded Gem balances. The old review said “credits purchased on higher tiers never expire, removing one common renewal trap”. That’s technically true and misses the point. They don’t expire; they become useless. And the affiliate page tells you what the company thinks the model is for: “Subscription renewals and Gem purchases both count, so one converted user is worth five commissions, not one.”

Who is behind it

The Terms of Service and Privacy Policy name VisionAI Labs Limited, registered address The Black Church, St. Mary’s Place, Dublin 7, D07 P4AX, governed by Irish law with Irish courts. The Irish register (via SoloCheck) confirms a company of that name, CRO number 754145, incorporated December 15, 2023, classed as a micro company in “Other Software Publishing”, with three shareholders, whose directors “have been the director of 9 other Irish companies between them; 3 of which are now closed”, at an Eircode shared with “at least 2,593 other companies”. That’s a virtual office, and a two-year-old entity, behind a product that launched in 2023.

The iOS app is sold by a different name: AI Research Group Limited. The old Trustpilot profile is for promptchan.ai, a domain that no longer resolves. So there are two company names and two domains in the brand’s short history. None of that is damning on its own; it does mean “an Irish company” is a thinner reassurance than it sounds.

First-session walkthrough

The homepage loads to a wall of community thumbnails under “Made with Promptchan: Explore over 20 million AI Girlfriend Images and Videos generated by the community”, with tabs for Top, Newest, Video, Following and a style filter. There’s no age modal in the page source; the pricing page’s FAQ says signup involves age confirmation, which is a checkbox-grade check.

Nav: Explore, Create, Chat, Sign Up. Footer: Discord, Instagram, X, an Affiliate link (to aiffiliate.io), Affiliate Guide, API Guide, API Docs, Business Contact, About, Contact, Explore AI Images, Create AI Images, AI Chat, Shop, Upgrade to Pro, “Buy with Card” (which goes to the Gems shop), Terms, Privacy, Report Content, DMCA, Refund Policy, Content Moderation Policy, Cookie settings. Language subdomains for German, Spanish, French, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Chinese. The site is a Firebase-backed single-page app; the /pricing, /premium, /plans and /faq URLs all 404, and pricing lives at /upgrade.

The homepage FAQ includes “Can I use what I generate commercially? In many cases, yes. Check the Terms.” The Terms say you retain ownership; public-mode creations are licensed to Promptchan and to every other user “perpetual, irrevocable, and transferable”; private-mode creations aren’t. If you plan to sell anything, generate it in private mode.

Chat experience and memory

The chat layer is the newer half of the product: companion characters from a Discover feed, custom characters on Pro, contextual images in-chat, voice messages at 1 Gem and voice calls at 2 Gems on Pro. The homepage FAQ promises “personality, memory, and roleplay”.

Users don’t agree about the memory part. The r/aitested listicle led with “No real companion/chat memory”; a Trustpilot reviewer wrote that “The chat is useless: every message costs money and drains all the available gems”; another said “Their AI chatbots encounter glitches, delays and errors all the time. It removes any feeling of immersion.” I didn’t find a single account praising the chat’s continuity, including in the 2026 r/CharacterAIrevolution thread where the opener said they were “not interested in chat bots” because they were there for images. Treat the chat as a bonus attached to the generator, metered accordingly, and not as the reason to subscribe. The old review’s specific claims (drift “after 15-20 messages”, a “memory field” in character editing, week-long roleplay tests) had no source and are gone.

Image generation

This is the part that earns the traffic. The style list on the live homepage runs from Real and Hyperreal through Anime, Anime XL, Cinematic XL, Hardcore XL, Hyperanime, K-Pop, Fur and Furtoon, with XL 2 and XL+ model tiers behind them; a third-party audit lists the quality ladder as Casual (1 Gem), Extreme (+1) and Max (+2), and Pro adds 4K. The Terms say the models are refined from open-source diffusion models under the CreativeML Open RAIL-M licence.

Trustpilot’s positive reviews are almost entirely about this: “Best image quality for NSFW AI image generation”, “Lots of possibilities and options for creating pictures, good quality”, “hands down the best NSFW AI”. Even the hostile Reddit threads concede it (“Promptchan is still decent”). The consistent negatives are prompt drift on complex scenes (“Prompts ignored, or several tries needed for one usable image, plus limb glitches in poses”, per the FirmSuggest complaint table) and the filter tripping on multi-person prompts.

The Explore gallery is the real differentiator. Twenty million public creations with visible prompts and a clone button means you rarely start from a blank box. The old review never mentioned it, which tells you how much of the old review was written from the marketing page.

Voice and video

Video is Pro-only: “Full-length AI videos, including extend, are part of the Pro plan.” Plus and Premium have none, whatever the listicles say. The r/aitested post said video “gets expensive fast” in Gems even when you have it; the r/perchance thread treated Promptchan as one paid option among many, not the one to beat. Voice is a message at 1 Gem or a call at 2 Gems, Pro-only for calls. Affiliate roundups still write “no voice” because the $14.99 and $23.99 plans do not include it. The old review’s “robotic” voice clips and “very brief animated loops” were unsourced; what I can say is that both exist, both cost Gems, and neither is what people subscribe for.

Customization depth

On the image side: style, model tier, pose library (basic on Plus, more on Premium, all plus custom poses on Pro), seed locking (“Lock your seed and refine your prompt to perfection” is the Gems page’s tagline), private or public generation, and the clone-and-edit loop from the gallery. On the chat side: text-defined custom characters on Pro. What’s gone: uploading a reference photo, editing your own image, building a character from an image. If your workflow needs a real face in, Promptchan is now the wrong tool, deliberately.

NSFW behavior and limits

Promptchan sells itself as “no filter” and runs a documented moderation stack: AI vision and text scanning of “prompts, outputs, and uploads at the point of creation”, human moderators, community flagging, a 48-hour removal target. The Terms’ prohibited list is long and specific: minors and “high school settings, or characters presented as minors”, real people without consent, incest, bestiality, scat, snuff, celebrity likenesses, and a catch-all for “objectionable content, as determined at our sole discretion”. The header disclaimer states all images are “purely fictional and do not depict any real individuals”.

So the honest description is: uncensored relative to Midjourney, filtered relative to its own marketing, and increasingly so. Users report banned-word failures on multi-person scenes and the “can’t verify… over 21” message on ordinary anime prompts. That’s the trade the company made in 2025 when it dropped uploads, and I’ll say plainly that a generator which can’t take a real person’s photo is the only kind I’d point anyone at in this category. If that’s the line you want held, Promptchan holds it, clumsily.

Mobile experience

iOS: “Promptchan: AI Girlfriend”, on the App Store since November 2023, seller AI Research Group Limited, around 4.2 stars across roughly 800 ratings per third-party trackers. A separate iOS listing with the same name from an unrelated developer is an impostor. Android: removed from Google Play on May 1, 2024; the mobile website is the official answer. The old review’s “progressive web app” with “offline caching of recent chats” and a date-of-birth gate “each time the PWA is opened” wasn’t sourced and I’ve dropped it; there is a web manifest, but I found no install prompt and no evidence of offline chat caching.

Pricing analysis

From promptchan.com/upgrade on September 15, 2026:

Gem costs the site publishes: voice message 1, voice call 2. Gem costs third parties report: Casual image 1, Extreme +1, Max +2. Extra Gems: on-site (card or crypto, half price for subscribers) or as G2A keys from 50 to 10,000 Gems.

The arithmetic that matters: on Premium, 400 Gems at 1 to 3 Gems an image is roughly 130 to 400 images a month for $23.99, or 6 to 18 cents each, with no video and no unlimited tier. On Pro, casual generations are unlimited, so the 800 Gems are for the expensive stuff (video, Max quality, voice) and the per-image cost for ordinary work is effectively zero. That’s why the only sane recommendation is Pro or Free. The middle tiers exist to be upgraded from.

Annual plans exist and auto-renew; Gems on annual “are credited monthly across the year”, and the refund window applies to each charge including the renewal. Crypto and G2A purchases are fixed-period and don’t renew. Pro is sometimes promoted at $26.99 for the first month, per trackers; I didn’t see the promo on the day I loaded the page.

Value vs alternatives

Against pure generators: Seduced AI is the closest rival for quality-per-image and is more expensive; my Seduced AI review has the cost breakdown. Against generator-plus-companion apps: Ourdream and Candy do the chat half far better, and Candy charges less at entry; see my Ourdream AI review and my Candy AI review. Against the rest of my bottom ten: Promptchan is the only one with a registered EU company, a real app, a published refund policy and a community, and it’s still the lowest score, because the others are being marked on machinery and Promptchan is being marked on how it treats paying customers.

Refund and cancellation reality

Cancellation: account settings, manage plan, cancel; the plan runs to period end. The Terms say so, the pricing FAQ says so, and the refund policy requires it as step one. The help page’s canned topics include “I was charged twice, or charged after cancelling”, “I deleted my account but I’m still being charged” and “I’m being charged but I can’t sign in”, which is the company telling you what goes wrong often enough to need a template. iOS subscriptions cancel through Apple.

Refunds: the policy (updated August 12, 2026) gives 30 days from any charge, including annual renewals, provided you “have not utilized any significant AI services” in the window. Cancel, then email with your details; they aim for 7 business days; refund to the original method. Crypto is “final and non-refundable”. G2A keys are the reseller’s contract. The policy closes with: “if a customer initiates a wrongful or fraudulent chargeback, we reserve the right to dispute the chargeback.” Unused Gems: the help page has a topic for it; the refund policy doesn’t promise it.

My old review said refunds were “a one-time 7-day refund if fewer than 50 images have been generated”, described a “PROMPTCHAN INC” bank descriptor, and reported “test purchases”. None of that was real. Corrected.

Safety, privacy and billing discretion

Privacy Policy: collects account details, transactions, public prompts and searches, IP and device data; uses Google Analytics and Google Ads (consent-gated in the EU/EEA/UK); retains data “for as long as necessary”, with no fixed period; doesn’t sell your email to third parties for marketing; GDPR rights and a supervisory-authority complaint route, as you’d expect from an Irish controller. There’s no end-to-end encryption claim; a third-party audit noted “the company can read chats server-side”, which is true of every app in this category.

Content and licensing: public-mode creations are licensed to Promptchan and to every user, perpetually and irrevocably. Private mode opts out. Use it.

Moderation: the most documented in my bottom ten. AI scanning, human review, flagging, DMCA, 48-hour target. The header disclaimer and the prohibited-content list are explicit about minors, real people and celebrity likenesses. The 2025 removal of uploads is the operational proof.

Billing discretion: unverified. I won’t guess the descriptor. Crypto and G2A avoid a merchant name on your card and forfeit refunds.

Support: the single most consistent complaint across Trustpilot and Reddit. “Slow to nonexistent, emails unanswered, and some report negative reviews disappearing.” One Trustpilot reviewer: “I don’t know if there is any customer support left there at all.” Also noted by a third-party reviewer and a Trustpilot user: the app rewards Gems for posting reviews, so weight the four-star aggregates accordingly. “The earn gems feature appears to be a total scam as you can’t claim even after helping them astroturf their socials,” wrote one.

Common complaints and patterns

Ranked by how often I saw them: paying twice (subscription plus Gems) and stranded Gem balances; removed features (upload, Edit, image-based characters) with no notice and, in one case, denial that the feature existed, still cited on r/grok in March 2026; deleted complaints on Discord and reportedly on review sites; support that doesn’t answer; filter creep against “no filter” marketing, especially multi-person and anime prompts, still the reason people posted “Alternatives to Promptchan” in April 2026; bugs, overloaded servers and disappearing memberships in 2026; one report of paid content vanishing at plan lapse; no Android app; and PromptChan affiliate bots, documented in r/modhelp in 2023, still the reason the brand looks bigger on Reddit than the genuine user pile is. Consistent praise: image quality, the community gallery, ease of getting started, and (grudgingly) that Pro’s unlimited casual tier is fair value.

Final verdict

Promptchan is a good image generator run in a way that makes people angry. The generator is why it’s the most-searched brand in my bottom ten. The way it’s run is why it’s at the bottom. It has more legitimacy on paper than anything near it (Irish company, refund policy, iOS app, documented moderation, and the spine to drop photo uploads), and it spends that legitimacy on a two-wallet pricing model, silent feature removals and a support desk that has effectively logged off.

Score breakdown: Image output, strong; the one area where the marketing and the users agree. Chat and memory, weak and Gem-metered. Pricing, fair on Pro and Free, a trap in between. Legitimacy, real company, real policies, two names and two domains. Customer treatment, the reason for the score: stranded Gems, deleted complaints, unanswered tickets.

Use the free tier and the gallery. If you’re going to pay, pay for Pro, generate in private mode, cancel before any renewal you’re unsure about, and keep your own screenshots. On those terms Promptchan is worth a month. On any other terms, it isn’t.
