Nectar AI

Nectar AI has the best character builder I’ve used in this category and I still can’t recommend it, which annoys me. The builder lets you author a companion the way you’d write a D&D character sheet: body, outfit, backstory, speaking style, example dialogue, reply length. The chat model then does a better job of staying in that lane than most of its price peers. And then you meet the business model, which is a subscription that unlocks the door and a credit wallet that charges you for walking through it, with prices you can’t see until you’ve handed over an email.

My original review of Nectar was mostly a rewrite of their marketing pages and I labelled its pricing “unverified” in three places. This version is built from the current Terms of Use (version 2.2, August 15, 2026), the privacy policy (unchanged since March 2023), the FAQ, the Love Island page that appeared in the navigation since I last looked, Ahrefs data on both domains the company runs, and every substantive Reddit thread I could find. Some of what I found is the usual: a credit meter, a thin free tier, memory that fades. Some of it is not: a companion app that converts your paid credits into a crypto token and a brand that has lost two thirds of its search traffic in a year.

TL;DR verdict

Nectar AI is for people who want to build a character, not pick one. If that’s you, and you’re happy on the reported $59.99-a-year Premium plan using the basic model, it’s a fair deal and the prose is good. Everyone else runs into the meter: the better models, the memory that actually remembers, the images worth keeping and the video all cost credits, and only the $179.99-a-year Ultimate plan includes any.

I score it 4.4 out of 10. The builder alone would earn a 7. The hidden pricing, the 2023 privacy policy, the shrinking traffic and the crypto side quest pull it down to where it is. Try the free tier to see the builder, but know that two separate sources say you can’t chat with the character you built until you pay.

The numbers nobody else will show you

Nectar runs two live domains, trynectar.ai (the one in my frontmatter) and nectar.ai, each with its own canonical tag and each serving the full site. When I saw the traffic falling on trynectar.ai my first thought was a domain migration, so I pulled both. Ahrefs, September 15, 2026, estimated monthly organic search visits:

So it isn’t a migration. Both domains fell by two thirds over the same twelve months and both roughly halved in February 2026, which is the signature of a Google core update landing on a site that ranks mostly through programmatic landing pages (Nectar has a “Tags” section and a guides blog that do exactly that). Combined, the brand went from about 66,000 estimated organic visits a month to about 21,000. That’s not a dying site, but it’s a company acquiring a third of the new users it was a year ago, and in a category where Ourdream went from nothing to 918,000 in the same window.

The backlink number on trynectar.ai deserves a sentence. 927,000 backlinks from 1,162 referring domains means about 800 links per domain on average, which is what you get from sitewide footer or widget links, not editorial coverage. It hasn’t bought them much: DR 41 is mid-table. Top countries are US (3,596), Canada (361) and India (189), so this is a North American product.

The company: Nectar AI, LLC at 8 The Green, Suite R, Dover, Delaware, and Lick Labs Ltd at 167-169 Great Portland Street, London, per the Terms. Both are well-known registered-agent and virtual-office addresses. There’s a phone number with a San Jose area code and a support address at nectar.ai. My previous version said I couldn’t find a named founder. That was a miss. Public listings name co-founders Keccak Wong and Zi Feng, a Sacramento headquarters, and a $3.9 million seed round in 2024 co-led by Mechanism Capital and Karatage. Neither founder name appears on the site’s legal pages. More on that, and on a May 2026 hiring fight that named both of them, after the Reddit section.

Who this is for

You are the customer if you’ve ever been frustrated that an AI girlfriend app gave you eight sliders and a name field. Nectar’s creator is the deepest I’ve seen: appearance and body, ethnicity, outfit, personality tags, a free-text backstory, example dialogues, speaking style, and a Long or Short reply mode. Then it gives you two ways to use what you built. Companion mode is the slow-burn relationship. Fantasy mode drops your character into a pre-written scenario, sometimes with a whole cast; several reviewers got pulled into the Bachelorette Party storyline and admitted they enjoyed it. The homepage’s pitch, “Multiple companions, one storyline, they remember every choice,” is Fantasy mode, and it’s the most original thing about the product.

You’re also the customer if prose matters more than pictures. The single most consistent piece of praise across Reddit is that the chat “flows naturally”, “feels smooth”, and holds the personality you set. One three-day tester made a character “moody when ignored, playful when complimented” and reported it “actually holds that pattern across chats.” That’s not nothing.

And you’re a fit if you’ll pay annually for Premium and stay on the basic model. At a reported $59.99 a year, 6,000 messages a month and 100 generations a day is generous for the money. The trouble starts when you want more than the basic model.

Who should skip this

Skip it if you want to know the price before you sign up. Nectar’s public pricing page renders an empty shell; the numbers only load once you have an account. Three reviewers who logged in during August 2026 reported Premium at $9.99, Pro at $19.99 and Ultimate at $34.99 a month (or $59.99, $119.99 and $179.99 a year). A fourth logged in on August 13 and saw a single Ultimate plan at $12.99 a month or $59.99 a year with 5,000 credits. Either they’re A/B testing prices or they vary by region. Neither is a reason to trust a figure you read online, including mine.

Skip it if you hate a meter. The subscription buys you messages on the basic model. The advanced models (Nevoria, Fuchsia, DeepSeek, Primrose, Orchid) cost 2-20 credits a message. Turning on memory adds 2 more per message. Images are 5-10 credits, video 50. A credit is about a fifth of a cent in the cheapest pack, so a memory-enabled chat on a mid-range model runs about a cent a message, which sounds like nothing until you’ve sent 3,000 of them. “Would use again if it stops acting like it’s charging rent for every feature” is the Reddit line that stuck with me.

Skip it if long memory is the point. Premium’s context is 8K tokens. Only Ultimate gets 64K and long-term memory. Testers put the practical window on the mid tiers at 35-50 messages.

And skip it if you want video that’s actually video. Ultimate-only, 50 advanced credits a clip, and the one detailed tester I found called it “a keyword-triggered GIF library, not actual AI generation.”

What Reddit actually says

Search “nectar” on Reddit and you will drown. iZotope Nectar is a vocal plugin. Nectar is a juice. I threw those out. What was left, from 100 posts that actually named Nectar AI or trynectar.ai and the comment trees of the 12 busiest threads (573 comments, 2024 through September 2026), is still mostly not a product review. It is an advertising campaign wearing a philosophy essay.

The pattern is obvious once you see it. From June through October 2025, the same shape of post showed up in r/AskFeminists, r/Cyberpunk, r/GenZ, r/Dreams, r/Paranormal, r/hikikomori, r/lonely, r/socialskills, r/MyBoyfriendIsAI and r/artificial: a sincere-sounding question about loneliness, misogyny, dreams or consciousness, with “Nectar AI” dropped in as the healthy example. Two r/Dreams posts, ten weeks apart, tell the same flooding-house story. On r/Cyberpunk in September 2025, commenters did not play along. One wrote, “This is an ad, somebody else pointed it out.” Another: “It’s just an ad for this Nectar bullshit, look at the post history, everything references this one specific AI model. There was a wave of spam for the same thing a few months ago.” I agree with them. Treat any Nectar mention inside a “do AI girlfriends help women” thinkpiece as marketing until proven otherwise.

After throwing out the campaign posts, the plugin threads, the ChatGPT jailbreak posts, and the DarLink / Lurvessa / MiocAI reply-bots, I was left with about a dozen posts and maybe twenty comments from people who had clearly used trynectar.ai. That is the genuine sample. Among those, the split is roughly even: chat and customization get the praise, memory, the meter, the free-tier wall and moderation get the complaints. It has not obviously shifted in 2026. There is still almost no billing or refund thread, which for a paid companion app usually means people either stay quietly or leave without posting, not that refunds are easy.

What the genuine users actually say, dated:

On r/AItexting, a review that is still the fairest one-paragraph summary I have liked that “The customization is pretty deep” and “Conversations actually flow fairly naturally,” then hit “The memory can be inconsistent sometimes - it remembers big things but forgets smaller details during longer chats” and a messy UI at around $10 a month.

On r/CharacterAIrevolution in September 2025, the “Is Nectar AI worth trying?” thread is the closest thing to a user forum. One commenter who had paid enough to hit the wall: “i gave nectar a shot and it does feel less restricted than character/chi but free chat isn’t unlimited. you can get some decent convos before it pushes paid.” Another, harsher: “I would say no. Nectar Ai feels way too retrictive and has a team that monitors and scans content. I’ve had mixed results where some of my companions are flagged or take days to be reviewed, Though in the community tab, other Users have clearly made underaged characters.” I cannot verify the second half of that last sentence and I am not going to go looking. Inconsistent moderation, slow on ordinary characters and allegedly blind to abusive ones, is still the worst combination in this category. A separate September 2025 post on the same sub, from someone hopping off Janitor, said “I’ve been trying many fantasy companions in Nectar AI. Tbh it’s been way better than I expected. Convos feel way more natural.” So the prose praise is not just affiliates.

On r/therapy in November 2025, someone wrote they had started “this nsfw app called trynectar ai” about six weeks earlier and were asking whether to tell a therapist that the character was giving them nightmares they could not “break up” with. That is not a review. It is a person who got further in than the marketing copy wants to discuss. I am not going to armchair-diagnose it. I am going to say: if a companion app is the only place you open up, tell the human you already pay.

Spend figures in genuine comments are thin. The older affiliate “spend-tracker” that put moderate Nectar users at $15-25 a month is still a wall of outbound links; I will not treat it as a log. Nobody in those threads posted a months-long credit spreadsheet. The meter complaints are qualitative: you hit a paywall, advanced models cost extra, custom characters lock until you subscribe. That matches the FAQ and the checkout reports I already had.

Comparisons people actually make: Character.AI and Chai are too filtered; Janitor is hornier and worse at memory; Candy is visuals; Nectar is the customizable prose one, until the credits start. Several genuine-looking comments then pivot to DarLink. Some of those are the same farm as everywhere else. A few read like people who left.

My read: Reddit does not have a Nectar community. It has a Nectar ad buy and a handful of users who like the builder and hate the walls. The official r/NectarAI link in the nav still does not surface as a living board. If you want signal, read the CharacterAIrevolution thread and ignore anything that mentions Nectar in the same breath as feminism, dreams, or a dead grandmother.

Who actually runs Nectar AI

The site still will not tell you. The Terms give you two shell addresses and a San Jose-area phone number. The people do exist.

Company listings and LinkedIn name Keccak Wong as co-founder and Zi Feng as co-founder and CTO. Development is dated to summer 2023. Headquarters is listed as Sacramento, with Feng in Mountain View. That is a more useful geography than Dover, Delaware. In 2024 they announced a $3.9 million seed round co-led by Mechanism Capital and Karatage, which is crypto-native money, which suddenly makes the Love Island token page look less like a random side quest and more like the original plan. A Reddit poster in May 2026 also claimed backing from Paradigm and BAM Ventures. I could not match those two names to a public Nectar round, so I am not repeating them as fact.

The same May 2026 post, copied to r/comfyui, r/recruitinghell and r/CharacterAIrevolution, is the only detailed look at how the company hires. The writer said Nectar advertised a pipeline role at $2,500 a month, assigned a production-level ComfyUI take-home with a $45 cap on RunPod costs, then after the work landed in Google Drive offered $800 a month for a graveyard shift, and stalled on reimbursing the $45. They named Keccak as the person on Telegram and said a demand note went to Zi Feng. I have not seen the receipts. One angry contractor is not a pattern. It is also the first time anyone on Reddit has attached a human name to the credit meter, and the names check out. If you are a developer, read that thread before you do a take-home for them. If you are a subscriber, it tells you the company is small, venture-backed, and not precious about other people’s time, which fits a product that hides prices until you sign up.

The privacy policy still does not name them. The homepage still does not name them. “Hear from 1M+ satisfied customers” is still affiliate-testimonial wallpaper. Founders on LinkedIn and ghosts on the legal pages is a choice.

The credit wallet and the crypto island

Two things about Nectar’s economy that other reviews skim.

First, the wallet is genuinely separate from the subscription. The FAQ defines credits as “the in-app currency used for premium actions, including advanced roleplay, image and video generation, and access to certain AI models.” Packs, as published in August 2026: 2,500 for $4.99, 5,500 plus 100 bonus for $10.99, 11,000 plus 600 for $21.99, 18,000 plus 2,000 for $35.99, 25,000 plus 5,000 for $49.99, 50,000 plus 15,000 for $99.99. Only Ultimate includes a monthly grant (2,500 reported). So a Premium subscriber who wants the good models is on the meter from message one.

Worked example on Premium annual ($5 a month): 1,000 messages a month on a 5-credit model with memory on is 7,000 credits, or about $14 in the $10.99 pack. Add 60 images at 8 credits and you’re at 7,500. That’s $19 a month for what the sticker calls $5, which matches the $15-25 range others report. Ultimate annual at $15 a month with 2,500 credits included and unlimited basic messaging can be cheaper for a heavy user, which is why the mid tiers are the trap.

Second, Love Island. It’s in the main navigation with a “New!” badge. The page invites you to “Convert your Nectar Credits to LOVE” tokens for “an exclusive digital realm powered by the Autonomous World Engine” and “Mega ETH”, which is an Ethereum layer-2. It recommends converting at least 1,000 credits, says the conversion “grants you in-game tokens”, and then, in the same breath: “LOVE has no intrinsic value. These tokens will be used in-game only.” I’ve read a lot of companion-app terms and this is the first time one has asked me to move money I paid for images into an on-chain token. It might be a harmless game layer. It is also exactly what it looks like: a way to make credits disappear into something that can’t be refunded and has no value by the company’s own admission. Don’t convert.

First-session walkthrough

The homepage today is titled “TryNectar AI | Create Your Perfect AI Girlfriend” and leads with the Fantasy pitch: “Live your Dream Fantasy. Pick a fantasy, meet the cast.” The nav reads Home, Create, Generate, Feed (marked New!), Love Island, Discord, Reddit, Twitter, Tags, Affiliates, Guides, Language, with Girls, Guys and Anime as roster filters. Below the fold is a five-item FAQ and a wall of testimonials from affiliate review sites (“Hear from 1M+ satisfied customers”).

There is no age gate before the homepage. The privacy policy says the site is for 13 and over and that enabling NSFW is where you affirm 18+, which is an odd split for a product whose own FAQ says “Nectar is strictly for adults aged 18 and over.” Signup is email. You then land in Discover with the premade roster, and Create walks you through the builder. Two sources report the wall arrives when you try to chat with your own creation on free.

The pricing page, both on trynectar.ai and nectar.ai, is a header and footer with nothing in between until you’re logged in. The Terms link in the footer goes to /tos, not /terms, which is why my old review’s source list had two 404s in it.

Chat experience and memory

This is Nectar’s strength, with a tier-shaped hole in the middle. Responses on the basic model are coherent, in character, and vary in length with the Long or Short setting. Personality tags produce observable differences and, per multiple testers, hold within a session. Fantasy scenarios give the model structure, and structure is where it shines: a multi-character scene has stakes and a plot, and the model tracks who’s who better than I expected.

Then memory. Premium is 8K context, which in practice is a few dozen exchanges before early details slide off the end. Ultimate is 64K plus a long-term memory feature, and it’s the only tier that has it. Enabling memory boosts on the advanced models costs 2 credits a message on top of the model cost. “It remembers big things but forgets smaller details during longer chats” is the fair summary, and “sometimes it flips mood unexpectedly… clingy or defensive, even though I didn’t trigger anything” is the less fair-sounding but recurring one.

Image generation

Three model families (Realistic, Asian, Anime), HD on paid tiers, landscape and portrait on Ultimate. Free users get about 10 generations a day. The Reddit consensus is unusually aligned: “images are mid”, “just kinda there”, “okay”. Third-party testers report 30-45 seconds a render and face drift across generations of the same character, which is the opposite of HeraHaven’s strength. If images are why you’re here, the builder is better than the renderer, and you’ll do better on Candy AI.

One thing the Terms do well: “Image uploads in character creation are not permitted.” No photo-reference characters, no face-swapping someone you know. That’s a real safety choice and I’d like more apps to make it.

Voice and video

Voice exists in two forms. Paid tiers get a monthly allowance of voice messages (reported 50 on Premium, 100 on Ultimate), and Ultimate adds voice chat. Every tester I found used the same word for the voices: robotic. One wanted “background ambience” for the scenario and got a flat read.

Video is Ultimate-only at 50 advanced credits a clip, running on what the company calls its own Nectar Video Model. There’s also a “Companion Video” presence feature that adds nods and smiles to the chat. The one detailed hands-on I trust described generation as keyword-triggered and GIF-like rather than true generation. I haven’t seen a clip I’d pay 50 credits for.

Customization depth

Still the reason to be here. The builder covers appearance, body type, ethnicity, outfit, personality traits, backstory, speaking style and example dialogue, and the FAQ’s advice is right: detailed prompts and expanded example dialogues produce dramatically better characters than vague ones. Premium unlocks 45-plus customization options and one persona (your side of the relationship); Ultimate goes to 350-plus and ten personas. The Companion versus Fantasy split means the same character can be your slow-burn partner in one tab and a cast member in a scenario in another.

Limits: no image uploads (good), no community-shared characters beyond the Feed, and, per two sources, no chatting with your own build on the free tier.

NSFW behavior and limits

NSFW is a toggle, and once on, the model is permissive across ordinary adult roleplay with minimal moralising. The acceptable-use list in section 3.3 of the Terms is explicit and worth reading: no underage content, bestiality, non-consensual sex, incest, urination, extreme violence, prostitution, abduction, illicit activity, professional advice, or hate speech, and “pornographic” content is defined as depicting real persons or their likeness, which combined with the no-uploads rule keeps this on the fictional side of the line.

The complaint to know about is moderation inconsistency: at least one user reports ordinary custom characters held for days of human review. If your character gets flagged, there’s a complaint process in the Terms with a five-business-day acknowledgement target. Test the NSFW toggle on a premade character before you pay, because that’s the part you can test for free.

Mobile experience

PWA only. Nectar’s own guide to “AI girlfriend apps for iPhone and Android” recommends adding the site to your home screen and explains that app stores won’t list uncensored apps, which is honest. The chat and Fantasy views work fine on a phone; the builder is long and better on desktop. Two Reddit reviewers call the UI “a little messy”, which I’d agree with on a small screen where the Feed, Love Island and Tags items compete for space.

Oddity: the Terms contain a full Apple App Store section (license through Apple, refunds via Apple, Family Sharing). I searched the App Store and found no Nectar AI app; the only match is a tea shop. It’s boilerplate from a template, and it tells you how much attention the legal pages get.

Pricing analysis

Take the most-reported August 2026 figures. Premium at $59.99 a year is the only tier I’d call good value, and only if you stay on the basic model and don’t turn on memory. Pro at $119.99 a year is hard to justify; it raises caps without adding credits, memory or video. Ultimate at $179.99 a year is expensive on paper but is the only plan where the meter mostly stops running, because it’s unlimited on basic messaging and includes credits.

The honest problem is that I can’t tell you what you’ll see. The public site hides pricing, third-party reports from the same month disagree, and the “promo” framing (Premium “was $19.99”) is permanent enough that the higher list price is fiction. My old review had Ultimate at “$5 a month” and a “Yearly Ultimate” at $60; that was Premium annual mislabelled, and I’ve corrected it.

Rule: create the free account, open Settings then Subscription and Credits, screenshot what you see, and only then decide. If the screen shows Ultimate at $59.99 a year with 5,000 credits, as one reviewer saw, take it; that’s a genuinely good deal. If it shows $179.99, think hard.

Value vs alternatives

Nectar’s builder beats everything in my ranking. Its images lose to Candy and HeraHaven, its memory loses to Ourdream, its voice loses to Kupid, its pricing transparency loses to almost everyone.

Pick Nectar if authoring the character is the fun part for you. Pick anything else if talking to it afterwards is.

Refund and cancellation reality

Cancel via Profile, Settings, Subscription and Credits, or by emailing support@nectar.ai, or through Discord, all of which the Terms explicitly allow. Access continues to the end of the paid period. Credits you’ve bought remain in the wallet; the Terms don’t specify an expiry, which is better than most, though I’d assume they vanish with a deleted account.

Refunds: section 4.6 says subscription fees are non-refundable “except when required by law”, then adds that “certain refund requests for Subscriptions may be considered by the Company on a case-by-case basis and granted at the sole discretion of Nectar AI.” That discretionary clause is friendlier than the flat refusals at HeraHaven or Candy, and I found no Reddit report of a refund either granted or refused, which itself says something about how few people have tried. Disputes go to JAMS arbitration under the Federal Arbitration Act with a jury waiver, and the company caps its liability at $50. Small-claims court is carved out.

Safety, privacy and billing discretion

The privacy policy is the weakest document on the site. It’s dated March 15, 2023, three and a half years and several product pivots ago. It has no data-retention section and no deletion procedure; it says you can contact team@nectar.ai. It describes standard TLS, cookies, and vendor sharing, and it says personal information isn’t sold for marketing. The commitment that chats “are not shared with third parties and are not used to train external AI models” lives in the FAQ, not the policy, and “external” is doing quiet work in that sentence. The policy also sets the site’s minimum age at 13 with an 18+ affirmation for NSFW, which contradicts the FAQ’s “strictly for adults aged 18 and over.”

Billing: web payments run through NMI, so the statement descriptor is set at the processor. I couldn’t verify what it reads. My old review stated “Nectar AI LLC” as fact; I’ve withdrawn that. No crypto payment option for subscriptions that I could find, which is ironic given the Love Island page.

What’s good: explicit acceptable-use rules, no image uploads, a DMCA agent, a complaint process with a stated turnaround, and an arbitration clause you can at least read. What’s missing: any statement about who can see your chats internally, how long they’re kept, or where the servers are.

Common complaints and patterns

By frequency: memory fade on the mid tiers; the credit meter on top of the subscription; images described as mediocre and slow; a free tier that shows you the builder and then locks the door; hidden and inconsistent pricing; robotic voice; a messy interface; isolated but serious reports of inconsistent moderation; and, now, a May 2026 hiring allegation that named the founders and a $45 unpaid RunPod bill. Praise clusters around the builder, the Fantasy scenarios, natural prose, and the cheap Premium annual. The pattern: a product team that cares about the roleplay, a business team that has bolted a wallet, a crypto token and an affiliate testimonial wall onto it, and a Reddit presence that is mostly the testimonial wall talking to itself.

Final verdict

Nectar AI is a very good character builder attached to an average companion app, sold through a pricing screen you can’t see and a wallet that never stops asking. The traffic data says the market has noticed: both of its domains are down two thirds year on year while the category doubled. The privacy policy hasn’t been touched since 2023 and the Terms describe an iOS app that doesn’t exist. The founders are findable on LinkedIn and invisible on the site. And somewhere in the navigation there’s a button that turns your credits into a token with no value.

Score breakdown: Customization, best in class. Chat prose, above average, tier-limited memory. Images, mediocre and slow. Voice and video, present on Ultimate, robotic and GIF-like. Value, good only on Premium annual with the basic model. Trust and privacy, named entities but a 2023 policy with no retention clause, hidden pricing and a crypto conversion I’d steer clear of.

If you love building characters and you’ll live on Premium annual without the advanced models, Nectar AI is fine. For everyone else, my ranking has 30 apps that will tell you the price before they take your email.
